December of 2021, Lunar Outpost, a company I lead and founded, is selected to investigate a magnetic anomaly at a never before explored region of the Moon called Reiner Gamma with our line of Lunar Rovers. Our team is grateful for the opportunity for our second Mission to the lunar surface.

Mission Overview

  • Launching in 2024
  • 20 kg class Rover
  • Science Instruments and Team Led by JHU APL
  • SpaceX Falcon 9 launch, Intuitive Machines Nova-C lander

Why This Matters

Investigating Reiner Gamma, a magnetic anomaly, will provide humanity with a better understanding of how the Moon, the Earth, and the Solar System were formed. This magnetic anomaly has been puzzling scientist for centuries. Now Lunar Outpost, along with JHU APL and NASA, will figure out what is the cause of this anomaly and what implications it could have for the sustainability of settlements in space.

Viewed together with Lunar Outpost’s first mission, which is headed to the lunar South Pole in Q4 2022 to begin testing communication infrastructure in anticipation of the Artemis program, the equatorial Lunar Vertex mission demonstrates the versatility of Lunar Outpost's Rovers and the breadth of mission goals that they can accomplish. This second mission for a commercial lunar rover platform is another landmark step that Lunar Outpost and its partners are undertaking to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon.

The Next Steps

Once the Mission is complete, the data will need to be analyzed by our science partners (JHU APL and NASA) to determine the cause of the anomaly. This will lead to greater understanding of our Solar System and help enable a sustainable presence on the Moon.
